Ricky Powell - Rappin With Rickster

Heads up on this forthcoming DVD release ‘Rappin With The Rickster’.  Started way back in August 1990 by Rickey Powell, a man many refer to as the ‘fourth Beastie Boy’, he is also one of Hip Hops most famous photographers. Ricky is releasing this DVD as a compilation of his finest moments from the show. Check out the trailer below!

The latest album from Onra is out now and available from All-City Records

Out now and available from All-City Records Onra releases his 5th studio album (although he mentions its his first ‘real album’)  entitled Long Distance which has been made and inspired by 80′s pop groups like Midnight Star, the Brooklyn Bronx and Queens Band, Change and SOS Band for example. Highlights on the Lp include the standout ‘High Hopes’ featuring Reggie B which is a pure solid groover. Check the video…If you liked Onra’s previous efforts such as ‘Chinoiseries’ & ’1.0.8′ be sure to pick this up and support All-City who continue to supply the freshness once again.

Onra will also perform here in Dublin on the 28th of May as part of the album launch in the Twisted Pepper so brush up on your Soul Train moves and bring the funk as it should be one to remember!

‘Come on Over’ feat Afrodeyte, the new jawn from Miles Tackett & Co. aka The Breakestra. Breakestra are no strangers to our nights over here in Ireland, in fact, our first ever live show back in 2002 was The Breakestra when they performed the Live Mixtape Tour and DJ Shortkut was on the turntables, what a night and we have been booking live bands ever since.

Anyways, we will more than likely have this talented bunch perform with  none other than Jurassic 5′s Chali 2Na at this years 2010 Galway Arts Festival in the excellent Roisin Dubh venue. More news on this next week, the guys are also playing this years Electric Picnic. There may also be an exclusive Breakestra Remix competition coming your way this summer, so get the MPCs at the ready.

This musicmentory directed by Jony Lyle is a homage to everyones favorite friend – vinyl. Featuring short appearances by Chuck D, Kon & Amir and Quest love (who pretty much sums it up perfectly for us), this piece is a reminder of how important vinyl was and still is in our community of music and collections overall…. Lets keep those fingers dusty because there really isn’t no other better format at the end of the day when all is said and scratched….And on that note here’s an important date for your diary

Palm Pictures have announced a Blu-Ray release of the classic Talking Heads concert film ‘Stop Making Sense’. Jonathan Demme (Silence of The Lambs) directed this 25 years ago and it still retains all its fervour in 2009. Talking Heads are one of the best bands of the last 30 years and if you have not seen this before, we cannot stress enough that you pick this up.

Not only is this a film of a great band but a great film in it’s own right. The band members raised the money to make the film themselves which gave them greater production control. From this came a film that has a markedly different approach from other films in the same genre. Innovations in lighting, camera work and stage presentation amongst other things combine to create something unique, appealing, undeniably stylish and essentially Talking Heads. The result is a film that is still regularly lauded as the greatest Rock and Roll movie ever. It is available directly from Palm Pictures and many other outlets.
