Real nice footage courtesy of Brian Cross with help from Mochilla crew (Dru & Eric) and Vtech of course. This is the first piece of footage from the live show that took place in Los Angeles two weeks ago featuring Quantic & His Combo Barbaro

As per Vtech/Mochilla

Often confused with xylophones, marimbas are a traditional folk instrument of the people of Southern and Central America. And though the instrument’s roots lie in West Africa, it ties together the music of the African diaspora and the inhabitants of the Southern and Central American shores on which they landed on in the 16th century.

The Pacific coast of Colombia is home to many genres of music. From its local music of the Afro-Colombian chirimia, the marimba, and outside influence of salsa, the music scene in Colombia continues to blend the old with the new.

When we look to rural towns such as Timbiqui, home of singer Nidia Gongora Bonilla, where musicians play in dedicated marimba houses and listen in awe. The music never stops, and the houses vibrate with the rhythm of the marimba all day long.

Memoria de Justinho By Quantic y Su Combo Barbaro Featuring Nidia Gongora Bonilla on Vocals is a tribute to legendary Marimba player, Justinho Garcia from Timbiqui. It was written by legendary female songwriter Ines Garanja on the occasion of his passing and holds enormous cultural significance. It is a classic song in the tradition of the Pacific Coast and was first recorded by Grupo Socovan, Nidia’s family’s band.

As Nidia introduces the song in the beginning of the video, she explains it is a Rumba from Timbiqui in the style of Quantic; a collision of sounds and influences in the best possible way.

Though the QCB has never recorded this song, it was worked out specifically for their first LA show and in many ways, this was the song that reached the audience’s musical souls. Los Angeles was open to Quantic and the new album and the band he had brought with him, but this song managed to put a smile on everyone’s face and a extra shuffle in everyone’s step.

Harmonic 313 (aka Mark Pritchard aka Troubleman aka Reload aka 1/2 of Global Communications aka 1/2 of the The Jedi knights…) came to Sixty40 for his first ever film clip. Despite releasing seminal records since the 90′s and being on Warp Records since 1994 and being the poster child for super-technical, superbly-crafted, bass heavy, crazy-ass electronica there’d never been anything to translate his floor-filling tracks on TV. Crazy. Sixty40 had to pioneer a variety of new techniques to take an entirely open brief into a eye-popping warning of extra-terrestrial doom.

Shot stereoscopically (i.e. on 2 identical cameras separated in space to mimic 2 eyes) the clip uses a flicking technique that was inspired by 2 frame animations of 3D photos.

In this technique, a sense of depth is provided to the footage by changing between the left and right eye views between each frame. In moving footage, not only does it add a sense of depth but also a definite intensity and alternative reality to each scene. For different people, it can create a curious mental floatiness in some shots.

check out the Warp Release page

You cannot deny his prowess on the mic, and it’s been a long time since he had a release that lived up to the reputation he crafted in the late 80′s and early 90′s with Eric B.

Rakim Allah returns with a new album on the way titled The Seventh Seal.

For this track Nick Wiz is on the boards sampling the epic David Axlerod ‘Holy Thursday’ (love this)…the lyrics here are excellent, let’s hope there light at the end of the tunnel with this release and it puts The ‘R’ back on the map

To create a strong position, theres blood in my vein
The chemical is identical, we one and the same
With seven letters in all three of my government names
Walk on water? Nah, neither did Jesus
Its a parable to make followers and readers believers
From Egypt to Budapest, Rakim is the truest left
Understand the Scriptures like the minister Louis F
I told you who God is, you ignored me like most the prophets
Jesus, Solomon, Abraham, Moses and Muhammad
I showed the scholars, well fulfill the broken promise
I spit this truth to predict the future like Nostradamus
Like Revelations, Im hoping my quotes reveal
The seven spirits of God when I open the seal
Interpret the holy Quran, these flows will guide you
Translate the Torah, and decode the Bible
Warn the elders in the mosques, masons, and the law
The seven churches, the synagogues, its the Renaissance
Skin is bronze, like the Messiah
Rakim Allahs bout to reveal a bigger secret than time and the God
