This popped up on Okayplayer last week, Raphael Saadiq’s proteges Tha Boogie. All things going well you should expect to see more of these guys in the mainstream in 2010. Up and coming and fusing all types of styles, with mentoring from Mr. Saadiq we can expect to see a polished outfit on the up.

His tragic fall from grace may have almost eclipsed his artistic legacy, Michael was in the public eye for 45years of his life, his intergenerational appeal was only eclipsed by Elvis Presley.

The man everyone wants to work with at the moment, Theophilus London has confirmed 2 Irish shows for ChoiceCuts. Fri 17th April in Cork’s Pavilion with StevieG and Colm K and the following night April 18th with DJ Scope in Revolution. A Brooklyn MC who cites Morrissey, Daft Punk and The Ramones as his main influences will surely go down well with the crowds over here

Theophilus London second mixtape since the release of JAM is the epitome of what fans expect from an artist. The Charming is the evolution of London’s craft. In a time where most artists think about their image and fashion, London is taking care of what is most important – his music.

The Charming goes where other Hip Hop projects are scared to go. It breaks the mold of what is expected by daring to be different through its structure. If your one of those people who are sick of the standardized sixteen-bar-verse eight-bar-chorus then repeat format don’t be weary London has made sure that every track does something unique. The way that Machine Drum mixed The Charming together gave it movement, it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that this project has a life of its very own.

The stand out track on The Charming is “Hum Drum” where Theophilus recites “As a little kid didn’t like my name/  But it’s more clear that the streets got rain/ Hate doing this for a check or fame/ This right here to relieve my pain”. London invites the audience to feel his struggle on this record, and that is why between 18 incredible tracks I am telling you that this one record alone is enough for any music connoisseur to pay attention to what he is doing.

My words can only do London’s opus so much justice. If there is one Hip Hop mixtape you check out this year, make it The Charming. It is a ground breaking effort, I say this justly because the integration of the ideas behind the songs are where music is heading. You will be hard pressed to come by another project this eclectic and properly executed, but then again it is Theophilus London that we are talking about.
