Ahu – Free To Love

You may be familar with Ahu (aka Dolly) already as she was the voice behind Flying Lotus’s big hit ‘Roberta Flack” along with many other great numbers, edits and mixtapes. Well this September Ahu releases her first single ‘To Love’ (which you can download here for free) on Paul Whites One Handed Music label.

There’s also a quirky but excellent Dimlite remix which sees him excel yet again. This won’t be released until mid September so in the meantime be sure to check out the mesmerizing video (and free download) which uses some dope Czech animation. Pure heartfelt music and emotion from Ahu yet again.

Bruce Haack - The King of Techno Documentary

Fans of Kraftwerk may or not may not know who Bruce Haack is, but they should as he was doing what they mastered several years before the likes of their famous ‘Autobahn’ came out. Here was a man who was creating sounds nobody had ever heard way before the technology was available to make them. Fascinating stuff! Check out the exert from the documentary (which was released back in 2004) below which will give you a deeper understanding of the man behind the music!

Stones Throw are set to release a collection of his music this month entitled Farad – The Electric Voice that will highlight Haacks work between 1970-1982 and will feature the track ‘Party Machine’ which has recently surfaced on youtube due to aÂ very hip Prince Laguage Afterparty edit. Bona Fide Skills – B.Bravo

Reining from San Francisco B.Bravo alongside the likes of Dam Funk, Devonwho, Reggie B & Grooveman Spot et all are currently spear heading the ‘Modern Funk’ movement so to speak. B.Bravo has been earning his stripes with releases such as Computa Love and the Analog Starship EP’s which can be listened to from Bravo’s own website and alongside forthcoming releases such as Two 2 Tango (which can be found on Dam Funks recent modern funk mix here) Bravo is certainly a name that you can be sure to hear more from in the future and one that is certainly hot on the beat scene at present.

As well as being a synth freak he’s also nice on the ones’ and twos’ featuring heavily on the Red Bulls Music Academy roster amonst various clubs around the world wheres hes known to be heavy on the ‘boogie’ side of things. B.Bravo certainly has those bona fide skills. We will have an interview with the man himself shortly alongside a guest mix so stay tuned for that. But for now check out the sounds of Computa Love below for some neck snapping action!

Uno Melodic – Label Love

Label love indeed. We thought it would be nice to shed some light over a favorite record label of ours from the early eighties and one that has had many classic productions from the main man behind the boards – Roy Ayers!

Roy Ayers - Uno Melodic

The label is Uno Melodic Records and was home to some of the most classic productions in the early Jazz Funk and Disco period. Soul Jazz Records have recently been issuing some of the labels rarer releases such as the ‘Ladies of the 80′s’ LP which features the classic ‘Turned Onto You’ and Roy’s own LPÂ ‘Lots of Love’ which features the much loved track ‘Chicago’ (amongst other dancefloor nuggests).

Another release the label is quite well known for is the classic LP released by Sylvia Striplin entitled ‘Give Me Your Love’ which was entirely produced by Roy himself who seemed to focus his production on female artists around this time and features ‘You Cant Turn Me Away’ a two step classic. Two other female artists included Bobbi Humphrey who put out the essential cut ‘Baby Dont You Know’ and Ethel Beatty who recorded one of our favorite cuts ‘I Know You Care’ which can all be listened to below. A classic label, one master producer, rare releases and timeless pieces of music all make the Uno Melodic label worth mentioning. Check it out!!

Miguel Atwood-Ferguson

Miguel Atwood Ferguson is an incredible artist. He has been one of the main guys behind recent projects such as the incredible ‘Suite For Ma Dukes’ outing on Mochilla and is also the brain behind the ‘Build An Ark’ jazz group for example as well as many many more outings. The Qualities of Life have put this short but intriguing little piece together on Miguels busy life to show us the spiritual character behind the music. Check it out below, fascinating stuff.

Who else could venture into these territories but Jazzman Gerald. Daring to go where no other label has before by releasing Sun Ra‘s 7” singles in there original format! We sure do love these little offerings for our collections. The tracks selected for this box set were limited upon there initial release with little as 40-50 copies seeing daylight on Sun Ra’s own label Saturn. This set of 3 x 45rpm singles are pressed onto glow-in-the-dark vinyl and packaged in a unique, custom-made triple gate fold screen printed sleeve, and strictly limited so be quick if you intend on buying one. Music for Jazz Dancers – Freestyle

Music for Jazz Dancers is a compilation that will be coming out on the 31st of May this year on Freestyle Records. It will host a an exclusive selection of nuggets taken directly from Dj Adrian Gibsons Dj sets from his club night ‘Messin Around’. The compilation will fuse together samba, jazz fusion and be-bop and is aimed for those who like to hit the floor. Highlights on the album include the incredible Fernando Gelbard track Alevacolariea amongst many more gems. It can be streamed from Freestyles Soundcloud page at present so be sure to check it out and try pick the Lp up at the end of the month if its your into the Jazz thing!

‘Come on Over’ feat Afrodeyte, the new jawn from Miles Tackett & Co. aka The Breakestra. Breakestra are no strangers to our nights over here in Ireland, in fact, our first ever live show back in 2002 was The Breakestra when they performed the Live Mixtape Tour and DJ Shortkut was on the turntables, what a night and we have been booking live bands ever since.

Anyways, we will more than likely have this talented bunch perform with Â none other than Jurassic 5′s Chali 2Na at this years 2010 Galway Arts Festival in the excellent Roisin Dubh venue. More news on this next week, the guys are also playing this years Electric Picnic. There may also be an exclusive Breakestra Remix competition coming your way this summer, so get the MPCs at the ready.

When Art Imitates Life

Did you hear about this? The RZA’s latest project? Victory Vs Death?…..

Well Sway and Tech from the World famous Wake up Show have created this project entitled When Art Imitates Life to highlight some of the major players in the game who have served their time (10 years or more) via limited canvas paintings. The RZA’s print for example will be kept to a minimum of 360 (300 40” x 30” & 60 80” x 60”) with others like Q-Bert and Shavu from System of a Down to follow.

RZA’s may look familiar as it has been based on the George Washingtons classic ‘Crossing the Potomac’ painting from 1851. Weird ay? well find out more from the man himself on they why’s, how’s and who’s here.

There may be some prints still available from the website which you can find here. There not so cheap however but there are at least 5 different payment schemes available to help you out if one were so inclined. So if you fancy covering up that empty wall in your house with some fly ‘art imitates life’ kind of vibe please get involved!

Introducing Matthew Hallsall

Here is an artist that doesn’t come around to often these days. A 25 year old self taught trumpeter, composer, arranger, producer and band leader from Manchester who along with others such as Finn Peters & the ever present Charles Lloyd have been ‘carrying the torch’ so to speak in today’s Spiritual / Jazz scene. Matthews debut album â€˜Sending My Loveâ€™ dropped in 2008 to great acclaim in the U.K and has been met with open arms by the likes Gilles Peterson (who featured the album in his ‘Top 40 Best Of’ from that year. He’s recently recorded a podcast with him too this month – listen here ) and Stuart Maconie from the BBC. Did we mention he’s also a DJ? His most recent album ‘A Color Yes‘ has that ‘classic sound’ which can be identified with the likes of John Coltrane, McCoy Tyner and Pharoah Sanders and is most evident on tracks like ‘Ive Found Joy’ & ‘Color Yes’. Check the video for evidence!Â A well rounded ‘Jazzer’ to say the least and a name to watch out for in 2010…….
