Like ‘Planet Rock’ by Africa Bambaata, Man Parrish’s ‘Hip Hop Be Bop (Don’t Stop)’ and ‘Jam the Box’ by Pretty Tony, Egyptian Lover’s first singles such as ‘Egypt, Egypt’, ‘My Beat Goes Boom’, and ‘What is a DJ if he Can’t Scratch’ combined the abstract electronics of Kraftwerk with deep bases and rhythms of Electro/Miami Bass and rap vocals. As the aforementioned artists, Egyptian Lover and his World Class Wrecking Cru colleagues rose to new heights, mixing electro loops, dark melodies and class tricks.

His first song, ‘Egypt, Egypt’, was a hymn in the global breakdancing scene in 1984. In the second part of the eighties, trying to reach even more people with his music, he began to print more melodies and vocals in the songs, but it is still the first records that have had more impact and inspiration and have been instrumental the work of artists as diverse as Autechre, IF, or Microthol Aux88.

Like many musicians, Egyptian Lover began his career as a DJ. In the early eighties, he became part of Uncle Jamm’s Army, a group that organized parties in Los Angeles for up to 10,000 people. Artists who played with them included Run DMC, Whodini, Dynamix 2 and Ice-T. Egypt was the star of the group with many fans, thanks to his excellent technique behind the decks.
Egyptian Lover started recording his own songs using only keyboards, a drum machine and his voice. He published them with his own record label, Egyptian Empire Records.

In 1984, ‘Egypt Egypt’ became a great success (gold) and his debut album ‘On the Nile’ reached the Billboard Black Album Charts. In the same year, he released his second album ‘One Track Mind’ which contained hits such as ‘Freak-a-holic’ and ‘You’re so fine’.

Egypt continued to work and achieve success, releasing several singles such as ‘Computer Power’ in which Jamie Jupiter lends his voice. In 2005, he released his album ‘Platinum Pyramids’. One could see the evolution of his sound, using modern techniques and rhythms darker but in the unmistakable style of Egyptian Lover. At the moment he is working on yet another album entitled ‘1984’.

For those who don’t know, The Pre:Seed is a lovingly crafted, painstaking trawl through hip-hop’s history, encompassing electro and rap classics and even paying a welcome visit to early dance/acid house barnstormers. The mixes fly thick and fast, layers of beats clatter out of the speakers, acapellas sit comfortably astride booming instrumentals before giving way to a perfectly placed cut, flipping samples through the ringer, dropping doubles back and forth but never missing a beat. This aint no attention deficit disorder break fest however, the mix never seems overly cluttered or breakneck, there is plenty  of room to breath in here. From the expert cut up’s of the intro (where he finally dispells any doubt of how to pronounce his name…Tukky? Two Key?) to the closing bars, this is a confidently programmed, personal journey that panders to no-one while celebrating the block rocking ethos that is so often lacking in turntablism and beat digging culture.

After seventy years of China’s opium-related subjugation by Queen
Victoria and her allies, a force of resistance fighters — termed
“Boxers” by the British — rose to the challenge in 1898. Calling
themselves “The Righteous Fists of Harmony,” this secret society of
martial artists felt they held magical powers: they believed
themselves bulletproof, able to fly, and capable of raising the dead
(who would then fight alongside them). And so began the brief Boxer
Rebellion; three years later 100,000 Boxers had fallen, their magic
helpless against the cutting-edge machinery of war. The British
prevailed only to face ultimate defeat, as their empire rapidly
declined.

Daedelus endeavors to compose a requiem for the end — of beliefs, of
lives, and of an era. This elegy for a bygone battle sheds light on
our own contemporary conundrum: will our faith in modernity be our
downfall? Are we blinded by this age of wonders, doomed to be
destroyed by our ingenious inventions? Although Daedelus’ music has
always juxtaposed organic and electronic elements, they war as never
before on “Righteous Fists of Harmony,” a portrait of a tumultuous era
that came crashing to a close.

Theophilus London – Humdrum Town by choicecuts

Brooklyn’s own Theophilus London is a pioneer in today’s electro-fuelled urban pop movement. His self-released mixtapes JAM! and This Charming Mixtape had blogs ablaze last year as he expertly rhymed on everything from Kraftwerk, Amadou & Mariam and a classic Whitney Houston torch song to his own unexpectedly clubby jams. Recently London has toured the US and UK with A-Trak and Jack Peñate and turned heads at Rolling Stone, NME, The FADER and The New York Times. It’s on now: Theophilus London’s debut single “Humdrum Town” is available on Green Label Sound.
