With his new LP ‘Paul White & The Purple Rain’ due to drop in June on Now-Again, Paul White has composed this tasty little mix entitled ‘Shake Your Leg’ to get us in the mood. This follows in the same theme as his previous mixes in the sense that its full of quirky samples and an unusual selection of music, but dope as always. Highly recommended!

To celebrate the realunch of our website www.choicecuts.com we are delighted to present to you an exclusive mix by legendary cut and paste wizard and remixer orginator Steinski. We’re big fans of this guy and for those of you who don’t know Steinski is probably one of the most influential remix artists in Hip-Hop’s vibrant history.

With partner Double Dee (Douglas DiFranco; a prince) he co-produced the series of records known as The Lessons: The Payoff Mix, Lesson 2 (The James Brown Mix), Lesson 3 (The History Of Hiphop) for the Tommy Boy label. These analog tape cut-and-paste collages, still widely bootlegged (and wildly illegal), are generally acknowledged as three of the most influential works in the world of hiphop and dance music production. Cited as defintive influences by DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist, and Fatboy Slim, among others.

Add to this the fact that Steinski is one of New York’s most sought-after advertising copy writers and it’s easy to see there is a mind behind all this musical greatness!

We’ve got Steinski playing in Dublin and Galway this April (2010) so head over to the events section for more info!

Rizm shares his favourite soul classics dug up during various record shopping trips over the last while.

Matthew Larkin Cassell is a perfect example of how the LA private press industry of the late 60s and 70s produced some of the most overlooked soul music of the period. J.Dilla was hip to Africa years before anyone else thought of sampling them and Dorando reminded everybody what real soul music was all about on his EP ‘Let my People Go’ which was re-released on Ubiquity Records in 2006.

King Heroin must be one of James Brown’s most overlooked and insightful tracks which compliments the down the earth righteousness of Gil Scott Heron’s cover of the Marvin Gaye classic Innercity Blues perfectly. David T. Walker’s Lay Lady Lay inspired one of the strongest People Under The Stairs tunes from their 2004 album OST and Heatwave has to get a look-in on any mix of this nature.

Harold Melvin’s album Wake Up provided the piano that brought Kanye and Common together on the limited pressing (and now hard-to-find) 12″ ‘Food’; Sterelob rounds things off – perfect to follow up a Philly-soul master with a relatively new band and a track that saw Madlib and Jay Dee as Jaylib at their finest on ‘The Message’ way back in 2002.

Tracklisting
Matthew Larkin Cassell- All I’m Missing Is You
Africa – Here I Stand
Dorondo – Didn’t I
Gil Scott Heron – Innercity Blues
James Brown – King Heroin
David T. Walker – Lay Lady Lay
Heatwave – Star of the Story
Harold Melvin – Wake Up
Stereolab – Come and play in the milky night

No stranger to the ChoiceCuts family Gaslamp Killer once again delivers a tight mix, this time blendingthe last decade’s worth of Flying Lotus singles, album cuts, b-sides, rare and unreleased gems into a 39 minute mesh of thoughtful sounds.

As FlyLo himself says ( taken from http://www.brainfeedersite.com/2009/12/25/a-decade/)

Merry Christmas and happy holidays to everyone
as we’re approaching this new year, I felt it was time to let go of some things that have been gathering dust. Some old things, and some new things, I tried to pick out tracks that I know yall haven’t heard yet so there should be surprises around every turn.

can’t believe i’ve been making tracks for over 10 years now..That said, there’s so much to learn still.

I hope you all enjoy this mix. Thanks to the Gaslamp Killer for doing an incredible job on this.

Can’t wait for you all to hear my album ‘Cosmogramma’ coming out April 20th 2010 on Warp Records.

Enjoy!

Taylor McFerrin is redefining the one-man show. Combining his skills as a producer and performer, Taylor is making music heads around the world take notice as he seamlessly builds songs from scratch with his ambitious solo project. Fender Rhodes, synthesizers, samples, vocals and beatboxing are meshed together in his Brooklyn bedroom studio as Taylor builds from his roots in ‘60s soul to his vision of future hip-hop.

Thriving on a solid fan base through MySpace and the online hip-hop community, Taylor has gained considerable popularity and captivated audiences at some of the most legendary venues in New York City. In addition to his US performances, Taylor also toured internationally with the Yohimbe Brothers in 2005. Taylor performed in Italy, Austria, Brazil, Argentina and everywhere in between. MTV took notice of Taylor’s skills as a producer and used his beats to promote the 2005 Video Music Awards.

The release of Taylor’s first EP, Broken Vibes has gained international attention, thanks to the title track, “Broken Vibes,” which debuted on Benji B’s BBC Radio show. Since then, “Broken Vibes” has been on heavy rotation on Gilles Peterson BBC World Wide Radio. Fusing his beatboxing skills with broken drums and melodic keys, Taylor creates a style of sound that is both unique and modern. The EP also features several other original tracks that flex his exceptional abilities as a producer, musician and beatboxer. With sounds ranging from R&B to hip-hop to Brazilian, Taylor keeps the buzz on high for his debut full-length album with his undeniably intriguing solo project.

Harmonic 313 (aka Mark Pritchard aka Troubleman aka Reload aka 1/2 of Global Communications aka 1/2 of the The Jedi knights…) came to Sixty40 for his first ever film clip. Despite releasing seminal records since the 90′s and being on Warp Records since 1994 and being the poster child for super-technical, superbly-crafted, bass heavy, crazy-ass electronica there’d never been anything to translate his floor-filling tracks on TV. Crazy. Sixty40 had to pioneer a variety of new techniques to take an entirely open brief into a eye-popping warning of extra-terrestrial doom.

Shot stereoscopically (i.e. on 2 identical cameras separated in space to mimic 2 eyes) the clip uses a flicking technique that was inspired by 2 frame animations of 3D photos.

In this technique, a sense of depth is provided to the footage by changing between the left and right eye views between each frame. In moving footage, not only does it add a sense of depth but also a definite intensity and alternative reality to each scene. For different people, it can create a curious mental floatiness in some shots.

check out the Warp Release page
