B.Bravo Interview

We featured B.Bravo in our Bona Fide Skills hype section not so long ago and now we have him back with us again. B. took some time out from his busy schedule to provide us with a wonderful guest mix which you can download here and a very insightful interview below so if you dont know – now you know…

First of all I just want to say that we are huge fans of yours at ChoiceCuts and its great to see tracks of yours such as Computa Love for example surface and feature on the likes of the Brownswood Electric Compilation which was released recently and also get a 12” release on the same label. What does this mean to you and has it helped you reach a further audience?

Ya, thanks a lot man – really appreciate it.  Brownswood picking up that tune was definitely big for me. It’s really encouraging to get validated by a well known and respected label like that. The 12” was cool because it’s a first for me. We were looking to press it up, and they just stepped in and made it happen. (Big up Alex and Gilles!) It’s helped me reach a further audience for sure – I’ve had a lot of folks hitting me up just showing love. They seem excited for me, which is really dope.

How would you describe your sound?

I’ve noticed that you have some work lined up with the Japanese artist Broken Haze. Will this follow in the same mood as your present releases?

Ya we are doing a remix EP together.  He remixed my track ‘Midnite’ and I remixed his song ‘Rebuild’ then we did one collab track. Kind of a cool project.  A blend of soulful & techy sounds.

Your from San Francisco where ‘Funk’ has a major influence on music and culture. Do you think you would be making the same music or have the same sound if your were living in a different state like N.Y for example?

I suppose I would be into Funk no matter where I lived, but growing up in California, the Funk is definitely a presence around you.  Just hearing Zapp & Roger bumpin’ out of cars in the summer – that’s home to me. I feel like the vibe in NY is a little more serious. Maybe I’d have a darker sound or something. It’s dope out there tho. It’s intense! I was just out there on vacation – awesome place.

Your going to be remixing a Brian Deady track who hails from Ireland, can you tell us a bit about that and how the project came about?

I remixed his song called ‘Land on the Moon’ which was released on his album a couple months back. I think he just hit me up online and asked me if I was down to do a remix for him.  It came out cool and was also picked up by Nightmares on Wax and re-released on their last comp – ‘Wax on 3′

Do you have any further projects lined up with Mc’s such as the project with the talented John Robinson which Ive noticed on 7” recently?

That was a fun project – the Spinnery & John Robinson remix. I don’t have anything with MCs in the works immediately.  I’vebeen leaning more towards working with singers rather than MC’s. For me an MC has to really be killin’ (like JR). I have a handful of singers I really want to work with tho.

On the topic of vinyl, would it be fair to say that your a crate digger?

Yea you could say that haha. I’m not as hardcore as some cats, but you can definitely spot me at the record swaps out here and digging around in any city I visit.

Could you name your top 5 boogie albums?

I’d have to say Donald Byrd & 125 st Band – Love Byrd. Rene & Angela – Rise. Rick James – Reflections. Cheryl Lynn – Instant Love. Kashif – Kashif

The ‘Modern Funk’ movement seems to be really taking and its great to see artists like yourself, Dam Funk and Devonwho for example spearehead the way so to speak. Whats your take on ‘Modern Funk’ and where do you see it going?

To me ‘Modern Funk’ music is a blend of classic sounds and modern production style. It’s composed music, not sampled, with melody and soul. The ‘Movement’ is just a collective consciousness that we all share. We all want to hear real music that has feeling and comes from the heart. I want us to keep moving forward, while getting inspiration from and paying respect to the realness and love of the past, and make new music nobody’s heard before. I’m really happy that people are getting into the sound and we are getting recognition for just doing what we feel.  Dam-Funk is like the fearless leader and he really made the world aware of this sound. To me it’s really just about love for the music and for each other. Hopefully we can all just continue to grow together and keep spreading the message across the globe.

Who should we be keeping our eyes and ears peeled for in 2010 / 2011?

My man AD Bourke from Rome, Italy is absolutely killing things right now.  I can’t wait for his album! His live set is ridiculous too. Salva, the guy who really helped me get off the ground with Frite Nite is dropping an album real soon – I think early 2011. Its nasty. Also from SF, Teeko has an album on the way that is dope. He’s a real soulful dude.

Thanks for your time Adam, any last words?

Of course! Big thanks to the ChoiceCuts fam for bringing quality music to the spotlight and recognizing all the artists out there making music from the heart.  Hope you enjoy the mix! Peace
