On the gig front, here is some fantastic news! Marshall Allen plays at the Cafe Oto with the full Sun Ra Arkestra for two exclusive UK shows.

22 Pounds / 35 Pounds two day pass – Well worth it!

This is an extremely rare chance to see one of the most influential big-bands of all time play in a small intimate setting. Allen assumed the position of Arkestra Musical Director in 1995, following the ascension of Sun Ra in 1993 and John Gilmore in 1995. Marshall continues to be committed to the study, research, and development of Sun Ra’s musical precepts and has launched the Sun Ra Arkestra into a dimension beyond that of mere “ghost” band by writing fresh arrangements of Sun Ra’s music, as well as composing new music and arrangement for the Arkestra. He works unceasingly to keep the big-band tradition alive.

Jazzman really do dig deeper and are constantly striving to provide us with rare treats. This time selecting 6 excellent and super rare Afro-centric jazz 45s from Cohran’s back catalogue. This comes packaged into a color box, with detailed notes and original art paper sleeves. Quality as usual from Gerald – you need this!

You may be familar with Ahu (aka Dolly) already as she was the voice behind Flying Lotus’s big hit ‘Roberta Flack” along with many other great numbers, edits and mixtapes. Well this September Ahu releases her first single ‘To Love’ (which you can download here for free) on Paul Whites One Handed Music label.

There’s also a quirky but excellent Dimlite remix which sees him excel yet again. This won’t be released until mid September so in the meantime be sure to check out the mesmerizing video (and free download) which uses some dope Czech animation. Pure heartfelt music and emotion from Ahu yet again.

Haven’t heard too much from this promising New Jersey MC since the Kenny Dope release ‘Dope Musiq‘ on Ill Friction last year. The track was a banger, straight-up Hip Hop with Kenny behind the boards flipping the classic Gwen Mc Rae track “90% of me is you” with some nice drum programming and chops to boot. Since this teaser release, both artists have been in the studio working on the album titled Future Before Nostaligia for Kenny’s Ill Friction label (part of Kay Dee Records).

Over the last 20 years Kenny Dope has covered a wide range of styles and genres from house, hip hop, latin, jazz and funk to producing for Masters At Work, The Bucketheads and many more projects under pseudonyms. It’s telling that for Kenny to produce this full project means that Chappell has got some serious clout. Along with this his collaborations for the album include Biz Markie, Terry Hunter, Jazzy Jeff & Clark Kent, so there is no slouching in this department either.

Click here to view the embedded video.

On first listen Kenny has taken a straight-up approach for the production style of the tracks and this unadulterated hip hop could be the medicine we need to get us through these cold winter months ahead.

Like all great MC’s Rasheed Chappell has a story to tell, engaging wordplay and instantly recognisable voice and with the bonus of a super team behind him expect this release to bubble to the top and all the singles to be in the crates of discerning deejays across the globe.

Click here to view the embedded video.

This new leak from the album is Building 8 which highlights how far society has come and at the same time how much it remains the same since the world changing 9/11 event. A couple more snippets of Rasheed for you below also.

Miguel Atwood Ferguson is certainly one of the most under rated men in the music industry and is a name that many still may not even know. Always soulful in his approach to music, compositions and productions he is certainly a modern legend who has the 100% quality guaranteed stamp to his name.

This time around sees him teaming up with another giant in Bilal, who many consider to be one of the best and most talented artists around at present. A good combination hah? Check the video for their latest offering entitled ‘Someday we’ll all be free’. Recorded live in Los Angeles at Grand Performances, California Plaza July 23, 2010.

Next Friday 4th September is the time and place; Anyone with a penchant for disco music, clubbing and musical icons can we have your attention please. Our good friend DJ Monk One (Wax Poetics) has recently announced that himself and his crew in Brooklyn will be joined by none other than remix producer pioneer Tom Moulton on Friday September 4th on their program ‘The Rare Radio Show’.

Moulton is cited as creating the remix/edit and has produced records for artists like Gloria Gaynor, Trammps, Claudja Barry, Peoples Choice, Grace Jones and many more of disco and soul music’s glitterati and created the influential extended breaks and long playing mixes that inspired disco culture and DJing in the 1970s.

While we will be at Electric Picnic drinking poitin we urge you to get an education and make sure you listen to this tasty show and if you don’t catch it live, you can listen back later here.

Click here to view the embedded video.

As per DJ Monk One:

The Rare Radio Show started about 10 years ago when me & DJ Emskee were asked to fill in for a block of overnight shows on WBAI. We were big fans of classic disco, boogie and the sounds of legendary NYC clubs like the Paradise Garage, the Loft, etc, and so we conceived the idea of doing a special based around them. The show ran 5 hours straight with no commercial interruptions and included me, Emskee, Spinna, 3D and the team of vinyl historians Tomkat & Randy Anderson.

We’ve done 34 shows since then (this will be the 35th) and featured DJs like Red Alert, Easy Mo Bee (all well worth checking out folks!) and others as guests playing their interpretations of a NYC dance classics set.

Lots of these shows have been archived (search at deephousepage.com) and as we pride ourselves on digging out the deepest stuff and never repeating songs, have become a sort of textbook/tip sheet of dance music.

Anyway, the latest show will be kicked off with a rare live, in-studio interview with the legendary Tom Moulton, father of the 12-inch single, remix and the disco break.

It starts at 9:30PM NY time (2:30AM Ireland I believe) and can be heard live at http://stream.wbai.org/.

I think my set will start around 1AM NYC, or 6AM Irish time?

The Rare Radio Show #35 on WBAI 99.5fm in NYC feat. and interview w/ the legendary disco producer/remixer TOM MOULTON. 9:30pm to 5am…COMMMERCIAL FREE!!

7 1/2 hrs!! Dj’s Emskee, Tony Vega, Monk One, 3D, Tomcat, and Randy Anderson. Classic and obscure dance music from the 70′s to the present. Not to be missed. Stream live around the world at wbai.org.

‘If its too loud, your to old’. Yes indeed a great quote so turn this next one up. I watched American Splendor (2003) this week and was reminded of the Jazz track at the opening credits which blew me away. Such a good tune. Its by Joe Maneri and the track is called Paniots Nine. Listen below, my kind of Jazz. The soundtrack to the movie is also worth checking out if your into this kind of thing.

Click here to view the embedded video.

On the re-issue tip this week Jazzman recently put out another installment of their Holy Grail series. This time around its by Bobby Jackson. The LP is entitled The Cafe Extra-Ordinaire Story and was rare as hens teeth until now. Only 1000 available as per usual with Jazzman. Here’s the press release for this classic album!

‘You wont find the name Bobby Jackson in the jazz books. Yet here is a remarkable man who did more than anyone to promote live jazz in his hometown of Minneapolis, risking everything to open a venue for jazz lovers and putting on such luminaries as Freddie Hubbard, Roland Kirk and Elvin Jones. In so doing he rode the wave of financial insecurity, dealt with problems involving drugs, the law and the police, not to mention the issues and temperaments of the musicians themselves. Yet he still managed to keep things together enough to record a truly deep and inspired album with his band – although it took another 8 years before it was finally released, albeit in minimal quantities and with zero distribution!

The music is deep, modal and progressive jazz. The story is one of bearded coffee-drinking jazz heads, Elvin Jones shedding tears, silver foil backdrops, and we also reveal what happened when a young man named Prince ventured into the cafe one day with the intention to sit in on a jam session!

The LP is a reproduction of the original, pressed on 180g virgin vinyl. The CD also contains a 12 page colour booklet with previously unpublished pictures provided by Bobby Jackson himself. Interviews with Jackson and his band help to make up the extensive liner notes, telling the engaging story of the Cafe Extra-Ordinaire and all who took part in it.’

While on holidays this week I found a second copy of this LP which I purchased as it was in better condition than the one I had so being the addict I am I took it home with me that day. It contains a sample of one of my favorite hip hop Jams by All Natural and is called 50 Years Down the Line from 1997. The sample comes from the Ramsey Lewis Lp Mother Natures Son and is yet again incredible ( I always say that, I’m the worst critic ever). Anyway its this weeks classic sample source and can be listened to below as well as the smooth version by All Natural. This is real hip hop!
