Rizm uses the Pioneer DJM-909

ChoiceCuts DJ Rizm, what is your mixer of choice?
I’m using the Pioneer DJM-909 at the moment. DJ Scope upgraded his mixer and this was lying around the office so I took it home and gave it some much needed care and now it’s taken the place of my Vestax 07Pro.

I use a foot switch to turn on and off the effects

It’s a great mixer, lovely cross-fader. The up-faders are pretty crappy though, bit of a plastic feel to them but it’s a small point. The built in effects are great. What I really like about this mixer is the foot switch input. I use a standard controller foot switch to turn on and off the effects, great to punch in just at the end of a scratch especially when the delay is locked in to the BPM reading on the mixer.

Happy with this set-up for the foreseeable future?
Happy at the moment but it’s the Rane TTM57 I really want. That and a 256 monome!

Anything else to add?
Yep, I use the Samsung NC10 netbook to run Serato. It’s about €1,000 cheaper than a MacBook and runs Serato perfectly. It requires a small hack to get the screen resolution bumped up to fit everything on screen but it’s a great (cheap!) alternative to using a fancy Mac or gigantic PC laptop – mightn’t be as slick as a Mac but it works and that’s all that matters to me…

This is what Pioneer have to say…

I was thinking of getting that mixer myself but the upfader thing really put me off, a few people were complaining about them. I went for a second-hand DJM600 instead.

I upgraded the Ram to 1GB from 512MB but only about 6 months after I got the NC10. It worked fine with the basic memory.

Scratching/Cueing etc. is perfect. Crabs/Flares/Rubs are just not an issue – the sound is perfect. Usually a heavy rub or lazer scratch will cause problems even on a decent Macbook but I have yet to suffer a crash or latency with the NC10.

The hack to get the screen resolution is a simple one – Open properties on desktop > settings tab > advanced > monitor tab> clear box “hide modes this monitor cannot display” > click intel tab > graphics properties > display settings > select 1024×768 – just remember the screen will now scroll so you never see the full serato screen but it works really well anyway.

You can assign this action to a favourite link using various utilities out there as you will need to do this every time you reset the machine.
