It’s been a long time I shouldn’t of left you without a dope post to step to…First of all Happy new year to all, may 2012 bring you many more musical nuggets and unearthings than it did the last… Kicking things of, for this year of uncertainty is a jazz mix by Gerald who’s paying homage to Gigi Campi, a favorite jazz musician of his and masterminded the Clarke-Boland Sextex. Geralad notes ” their heyday was in the ’60s and their recorded output amounted to no more than a few LPs and 45s. Unlike many of their contemporaries, whose music could often sound dull and like hard work, their small group jazz was always done in impeccable taste, with rhythm and swing, and a sense of togetherness and fun.The man behind this band was Gigi Campi. He was the guy who put the band together and arranged their live and studio dates. He was the organiser, the motivator, the driving force. In the face of all kinds of logistical and financial hurdles, his passion for music was the sole reason behind his superhuman efforts to get the music out there…
Gigi Campi passed away on 6 January 2010, so on this anniversary I’ve made a mix of some of his productions. Not all the songs are from the Clarke-Boland Sextet, some are from related records too, namely some of those by individuals like Sahib Shihab, Fats Sadi and Johnny Griffin; and of course the Clarke-Boland Big Band.”
I was genuinely excited by this release when I heard of it this week as I absolutely rinsed volume 1 to the extent where I’m sick of listening to it. With volume 2 due for a release in the coming months it serves as another must have compilation of esoteric, modal and deep European jazz for those interested in this type of thing. Straight no chaser please!
SPIRITUAL JAZZ 2: EUROPE – Released 6 February 2012 – JAZZMAN CD/LP.046 by DJFryer

Thanks to Qool Dj Marv for putting me onto this following track…

Up there with the best live performances in Dublin last year was the Robert Glasper trio whose showcase that night was mind-blowing to say the least, great crowd also which added to the experience. Great great show… He is set to release his much anticipated Black Radio album next month with a hole host of guests and which also features an instrumental jazz version of Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’. The video below says it all….A vital release in 2012 not to be missed, bypassed or skipped…

Another group to check out include BadBadNotGood. They’ve done a great cover of Gang Starr’s ‘Mass Appeal’ in an old jazz standard, which is sublime. The album is Free to download from their Bandcamp, found from this following link. Their practically giving dope music away, how cool!

This next track was sent to me by Irish Dj Pier who’s always supplying me with jazz nuggets and other gems, this one cant go unnoticed or passed on and sinks in with Geralds mix above. Enjoy….
