Sometimes you just have to let the music do the talking. Enjoy these spiritual nuggets…

Soul Jazz records have been mighty busy as usual. They have recently released 3 mighty rare and sought after spiritual Jazz records which again are exact reproductions of the (nonexistent vinyl) originals. If this is your thing then you can go no wrong, especially with the Steve Colson & The Unity Troupe LP – Highly recommended music on the ego spiritual tip and limited to 1000 copies wordwide.
Steve Colson & The Unity Troupe
In the early 1970s pianist and composer Adegoke Steve Colson and vocalist Iqua Colson were both members of The Association for Advancement of Creative Musicians, the radical home of jazz music in Chicago, and spiritual home of the Art Ensemble of Chicago. In 1980, Colson released ‘Triumph!’, recorded in Chicago with a stellar line-up of Art Ensemble and AACM members in the group including Joseph Jarman and Doug Ewart. This album was released on the private-press Silver Sphinx label, and distributed mainly in the local Chicago area.

Pheeroan ak Laff — House of Spirit : Mirth
‘House of Spirit: Mirth’ is one of the most radical of deep jazz releases of its time. Avant-garde beyond a doubt but with an Afro-centric rhythmical intensity hard to find in the myriad of independent free/loft jazz recorded in New York at the time. Influenced by Alice Coltrane, Sun Ra, Duke Ellington and Rahsaan Roland Kirk, AkLaff also studied African drumming travelling to and working in the Ivory Coast, Togo, Swaziland, Malawi, Liberia as well as Nigeria, where he performed with Fela Kuti.

Lloyd McNeill Quartet – Washington Suite
Flautist and composer Lloyd McNeill is also a distinguished American painter, poet, and photographer born in Washington, D.C., in 1935. His multi-disciplinary creative life has led to encounters and friendships with Nina Simone, Picasso, Eric Dolphy, Nana Vasconceles and other legendary cultural figures.
A respected painter and artist, Lloyd McNeill continues to perform as both musician and poet worldwide.Musically, McNeill has worked in many areas of African-American music. He performed in latin groups in the 1950s and 60s and led his own Brazilian group in the 1970s and 1980s. He has also composed for both ballet and art exhibitions.

More info on these releases can be found from the Soul Jazz Website HERE.

All roads lead to the Workmans Club tomorrow as The Robert Glasper Experiment take stage. Equally feted in the hip-hop and R’n’B world, he’s musical director for Mos Def and his meteoric rise has seen him touring and recording with Erykah Badu, Kanye West, Talib Kweli, Maxwell, Meshell Ndegeocello and Q-Tip. Highly recommended show!
The evening’s fun will be topped and tailed with music from the Dublin scene, courtesy of an opening set from local jazz and emcee collective Mixtapes from the Underground, and an aftershow jam session. More info here.
