I came across this documentary earlier in the week ‘Jazzin the Black Forest’. It’s a brief history about the pioneering leftfield jazz record label – MPS also referred to as the German Blue Note and is an affectionate portrait of the label and his founder. Many great Lp’s have come out from the label including my personal favorite ‘George Duke – Inner Source’. Other famous international jazz musicians to feature on the label include Oscar Peterson, Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington and Dizzy Gillespie. Peep the trailers below.
The song from the video is : The Third Wave – Maiden Voyage

And on the topic of Maiden Voyage – Visionary musician HERBIE HANCOCK has announced a special appearance at Dublin’s GRAND CANAL THEATRE on October Bank Holiday Sunday 24th. Check the press release
‘One of the world’s most respected musicians, Hancock has pioneered many genres in his long career- from jazz to hip hop, and electro to R&B. Branching out from his roots in jazz, the singer created a track that became an anthem for a generation – “Rockit”. It was one of the first songs ever to feature “scratching”.
His latest creation, The Imagine Project, brings together artists from all over the world under the central themes of peace and global responsibility. It combines recordings and film, and features Irish artists The Chieftans and Lisa Hannigan, as well as icons Dave Matthews, Jeff Beck, John Legend, Seal and Chaka Khan amongst others.’

On the releases front this week the – Philip Cohran & The Artistic Heritage Ensemble - Zulu 45s Collection is now available and can be picked up from All-City for those of us in Dublin (support your local record shop) and most decent online shops as well. Be sure to invest your time in this. Beautiful stuff indeed…
‘The man Sun Ra could have been! Living, eating and pushing musical boundaries together throughout the ’60s, the two musical prophets eventually went their separate ways. Sun Ra travelled the intergalactic highways, while Cohran looked far, far away across the Atlantic. Both men were musical visionaries, both blending their ideas and notions of progressive, cosmic jazz with the spirits – Ra seeking truth from the cosmos, Cohran from Africa. Open your mind to the visionary sounds of Philip Cohran – brought to you by Jazzman’….They dig deeper!
