Kicking things of this week we have a ‘Summer Jazz Mix’ by Gilles Peterson which he posted up on his Worldwide blog last week or so. Incredible selection as per usual with Peterson. This mix features a fantastic version of ‘My Favorite Things’ by Sarah Vaughn and one which Ive never heard before amongst other unheard nuggets. On the topic of ‘My Favorite Things’ here’s my personal favorite version of the song by Al Jarreau below.Check out the break at the beginning – killer!

Can anyone name the artist who sampled the Reggie Moore – Collage track on this mix (5th track in) ??? Another killer break…Thats comes straight of the ‘Furioso’ LP which is well worth checking out and investing your time in. Petersons mix can be streamed or downloaded from here. Fantastic stuff yet again!

Another Jazz mix. This time its Madlib yet again supplying the heat! This will be volume 8 of the Medicine show series which I touched on last week and a series of releases thats been pretty solid so far. This mix by Madlib will be entitled ‘Advaned Jazz’. The artwork for this release is a take on the George Washington Crossing of the Delaware River, a very famous piece of work which Rza also put his touches to on the W.A.I.L project if you can remember that. Madlibs take on it is quite impressive – ‘Jazzcats Crossing the Hudson’ check out Miles Davis captaining the crew. Pretty clever ay? Hopefully Stones Throw will release a poster of this. Again not to be slept on if you like this kind of thing! CD only.

Madlib - Advanced Jazz

George Washington - Crossing the Delaware

Heads up on this release on Strut which follows the Heliocentrics ventures with Ethio jazz Godfather Mulatu Astatke (dope album) that sees The Heliocentrics resurface alongside another fascinating jazz enigma, ethno-musicologist, jazz maestro and multi-instrumentalist, Lloyd Miller. Absolute killer album. Jazzman also released some of Lloyd Millers work last year on a compilation which covered work from across his career entitled ‘A Lifetime in Oriental Jazz‘. Essential! Expect with this album a freeform mix of Eastern Jazz arrangements and angular psychedelics from another duo that sound like they have been playing together for years. Grab a free Mp3 from the album here! This will no doubt feature in an array of ‘end of year’ lists – guaranteed!
Heres a classic cut by Donald Byrd from the ‘Places & Spaces’ LP arranged by my favorite producers – The Mizell Brothers (Larry is the man!) entitled Wind Parade that you may be familiar with already as Black Moon used it on ‘Buck Em Down’ (classic). This tune features in most of my Dj Sets and one that always gets me in da party mood – everytime! how can it not. Love this track, check it out and enjoy below!

On a side note also check out these Jazz inspired flyers. Find more of these from the www.flyergoodness.blogspot.com. A really great art blog worth bookmarking by the way!

I had been talking with some friends of mine this week about the demise of turntablism and that it was a shame that its fallen to the way side so to speak but what did arrive from that conversation was a reminder of this very very dope routine by D-Styles who kills it with this Jazz loop. Check the crowd reaction at 1.54 in. Incredible stuff – really miss routines like this!
